Self motivation- a pro or a con ?
I am generally a self-motivated person — both personally and professionally.
On the personal front, little things excite me easily.
On the professional front, I genuinely enjoy my work. Doing something well gives me a “kick” and pushes me to do better — independent of instructions, supervision, or escalation.
This motivation helps me maintain my morale and that of my team.
I try to reduce non-value-adding work, create meaningful outcomes, and do justice to the salary I earn.
However, somewhere in this chain, something feels off.
Like any normal human being, I also expect — if not appreciation — at least due credit, visibility, and to be heard.
What often happens instead is this:
Because work flows smoothly, the effort behind it isn’t understood.
Because clarity already exists, questions arise — often driven by insecurity rather than curiosity.
Mistakes are hard to accept, especially when the person doing well is someone you feel insecure about.
The irony is that self-motivation, which should be an asset, quietly becomes a disadvantage.
Prevention goes unnoticed. Stability feels weightless. And consistency becomes invisible.
This makes me wonder —
is being self-motivated always a pro, or does it sometimes turn into a con in itself?
